BAER (Bilateral Auditory Evoked Response)Testing determines whether or not a dog can hear.
When the test is performed, electrodes are stuck into the dog's skin at the ears and the top of the head. A series of "clicks" is transmitted into the dog's ear canal through a small microphone. The electrodes measure the amount of evoked response (the response is involuntary) and the result is the graph that you see below. As long as the line is not flat, the dog can hear. The test can be performed on puppies as young as 5 weeks and one test is sufficient for the life of the dog as far as congenital deafness. The dog can still become deaf later in life due to injury or infection, etc.
OFA now keeps a database of dog's that have been BAER tested.
